Blind Start of America’s mission is to serve blind and visually impaired persons to lead lives of independence. This will be achieved through education, training, counseling, communication, and technology.
By following our 3 Vowel Vows, we will continue to serve our mission to its fullest:
A-Awareness: More and more people today are becoming blind due to diseases such as diabetes and glaucoma. Blindness affects all ages, races, genders. BSA plans to promote awareness to our clients as well as the community and help the public understand that blindness does not mean a person cannot be a part of “normal” society.
E-Education: Did you know, of Americans who have vision loss, 5.4 million go on to college but only 3.6 achieve a bachelor’s degree or higher? It is BSA’s mission to empower more blind/visually impaired persons to achieve higher education and help them work with the Dept. of Rehabilitation to obtain the tools they need to function in a sighted world.
I-Independence: Currently, less than 1% of all disabled persons ever reach the American dream of owning a home. Through higher education and job training, BSA plans to help increase the number of blind/visually impaired persons who rent or own a home.
The time is NOW to make a difference in the lives of the blind and visually impaired community. Our “Visionary Experiences…Blindfolded” series is helping to promote awareness and gain funding so we can complete our missions. The first in the series is the Benefit for the Blind on Friday, April 24 at Holy Family Church in Artesia featuring Super Cr3w, winners of MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew Season 2. We also have blindfolded and blind or visually impaired performers joining us. I hope you can make it to support BSA and our worthy cause.
Coming up on June 6th is the Blind Mud Run at the Camp Pendleton Hard Corps Mud Run. We have 12 teams of 5, including one visually impaired runner and one blindfolded runner, participating in this event. This event will be followed by a luau afterparty with dancers, island food, and great company!
Last but not least, we have the Dinner in the Dark brought to you by Brian Tom on October 10 at the Sheraton Cerritos Hotel. It will be an evening of sensory experiences. We are also working with the head chef of the Sheraton to come up with a menu full of pungent tastes and textures.
We need your 3 Ts: time, treasures and talent, to help make these events happen. Please show your support by coming out or emailing us to let us know how you want to contribute to our worthy cause.
Thank you and have a blessed day!
Best Regards,
Brian Tom
